The most important parts of a card are the rank and suit combinations that are unique to each of them in a standard 52-card deck. Ranks are arranged in ascending numerical order with the lowest being 2 and the highest being 10. Above the highest number is the ‘face cards’ namely jack (J), queen (Q), and king (K) in ascending order. The highest possible rank is Ace (A). Some versions of poker, like Hold’em, count Ace as lower than 2 to make more combinations work.

Suits refer to the shapes and colour that represents one of four copies of cards for each rank. There are four of them namely spades (♤), clubs (♧), diamonds (♢), and hearts (♡). All of them are equal to each other and would end in a tie if they share the same rank. Their purpose is to create more combinations possible beyond what the ranks can form like the flush which only consists of five cards with the same suit.

The hand is the participant’s representative in poker. It’s formed by several parts with the most important ones being two cards given to each player known as ‘cards in the hole’. That’s already two cards with the highest possible combination being pairs of aces. The rest of the hand is formed by combining the cards in the hole with the community board. 

The community board consists of five other cards that everyone at the table shares. Meaning, you combine your two cards in the hole with any three other pieces on the board to make a five-card hand. The community board is typically formed in three turns with the first one revealing three cards facing up known as the flop. Next is called the ‘turn’ when the fourth card is revealed then lastly the ‘river’ where the fifth card is flipped up. 

This rule is based on Texas Hold’em with other versions giving each player five cards in the hole, instead. The Hold’em version is what you will see in most live table games like in the Dubai7 mobile app.

The winner of a poker game is whoever has the better combination of cards called a ‘winning hand’. It has a hierarchy based on how rare each combination is compared to the other. This system isn’t universal because some versions of poker don’t follow the standard 52-card deck and five-card hand combinations rules. 

The principles of the hierarchy will be similar but combos that are impossible to make with the unique conditions. A great example of this is the three card poker where five-card combos like full house and four of a kind are removed. Teen Patti, the most popular poker-like game in India, also has three cards per hand. However, they follow a different combination hierarchy from poker. Keep in mind that live dealer games are between you and the house but there is only one hand shared by all players seated. This means you are all free to make decisions based on the same cards.
