IPL Franchises Seek Changes in Retention Policy
Increase in Number of Retentions
Most IPL franchises have expressed a desire to increase the number of player retentions, which was limited to four before the last mega auction in 2021. According to a recent report, many teams are requesting between five to seven retentions, with one franchise even suggesting eight. Conversely, some teams have proposed that there be no retentions at all.
Introduction of Right To Match Cards
Alongside discussions about retentions, some franchises have suggested the reintroduction of Right To Match (RTM) cards. RTM cards allow a franchise to match the final bid for a player who was part of their team in the previous season. This option was available during the 2018 mega auction but was not included in the 2021 auction.
Impact Player Rule to Stay
The contentious Impact Player rule, which has been a topic of much debate, is expected to be retained for the next IPL season. This rule has been a point of contention among teams and fans alike.
BCCI and Franchise Discussions
BCCI Acting CEO and IPL in-charge Hemang Amin has recently consulted with the CEOs of various franchises regarding the retention policies and the inclusion of RTM cards. The final decision on these policies will be made later this month when board officials meet with the team owners. Additionally, there have been discussions about increasing the player purse, which is currently set at Rs 100 crore. The report suggests that an increase of up to Rs 20 crore cannot be ruled out.
KKR’s Success and Call for Changes
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) emerged victorious in the IPL 2024 with a team featuring many young players. KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, who played a significant role in nurturing young talent, expressed frustration with the mega auctions, calling for five retentions and three RTM cards. Nayar’s comments highlight the ongoing debate about how best to structure team rosters in the IPL.(Dubai7 realmoneygame)
